EDS: Clarifies 3rd par - the man charged was named by media

ADELAIDE, April 30 AAP - Police are still baffled why a man gunned down three neighbours
who had moved to Australia from South Africa for safety reasons.

Police spent Saturday scouring two homes in Adelaide for clues after a man turned on
his neighbours early on Friday, killing three and wounding a teenage boy and a police
officer who had come to their rescue.

Media reports say Donato Anthony Corbo, a 39-year-old from Hectorville in the city's
northeast, will face court on Monday charged with three counts of murder and two of attempted
murder after the shooting spree and an eight-hour standoff with police.

Corbo allegedly murdered a man, 64, his wife, 65, their son-in-law, 41, and wounded
his 14-year-old son and a policeman. The family are believed to be from South Africa.

The couple's daughter and an 11-year-old boy who was staying at the house escaped uninjured.

Police have reportedly removed three guns from the home where Corbo lived with his parents.

Detective Inspector Denise Gray said detectives still did not know why the victims
were killed, with apparently no disputes between the neighbours.

"There doesn't appear to be any motive," Insp Gray told the Nine Network on Saturday.

It is understood the murdered couple were visiting Australia from South Africa and
were staying with their daughter's family.

Neighbour Stephen Whitehead said the South African family's daughter had moved to Australia
for a safer life.

"It's pretty ironic that they moved her for safety reasons, and how this has happened
to them, it's very sad," Mr Whitehead told the Nine Network.

They had just become settled and "kind of made a go here, and got established in jobs", he said.

A member of their church said they were a deeply religious family and "they were lovely
people, they wouldn't hurt anyone".

Police were alerted by a frantic call at 2.30am (CST) on Friday from the woman who
survived, saying shots were being fired into their front door on Montacute Road.

The gunman shot at officers after they arrived, striking one of them in the jaw, while
a second officer injured his knee.

The man fled next door to his own home and held police at bay for eight tense hours
before he gave himself up.

The wounded boy went to hospital in a stable condition while the officer who was shot
was deemed serious but stable and placed in an induced coma with surgery expected on his
jaw.

On Saturday, police continued to search the victims' home and the home of the gunman
to determine what led to the tragedy.

Insp Gray said the swimming pool at one of the homes had also been drained for possible evidence.

"There's obviously two houses that need to be processed basically inch by inch, so
there's a tremendous amount of work involved," she told the ABC.

The alleged gunman was refused bail, according to media reports.

SA:Man fined over bomb and weapons threats

By Tim Dornin

ADELAIDE, Feb 15 AAP - A homeless Melbourne man has been fined more than $3,000 for
suggesting to a plane crew he had bombs and weapons in his hand luggage.

Jason Brown was on his way from Melbourne to be reunited with his family in Western
Australia when he was taken off a Virgin Blue flight on Monday night after boarding in
Adelaide for the final leg of his journey.

Prosecutor Anna Brebner told the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday that when the
39-year-old boarded the plane the cabin crew noticed some unusual behaviour.

She said that when Brown was asked to put his shoulder bag under the seat rather than
on the seat next to him he responded by saying, "leave it there, maybe it's got weapons
and bombs in it".

Ms Brebner said Brown was then told he would be removed from the plane in line with
airline policies with his comments regarded as a threat to the aircraft.

The prosecutor said there were 125 passengers on board at the time and the offending
was serious given the community's sensitivity to threats of terrorist activity.

Duty solicitor Stephen Law said Brown, who suffers from schizophrenia, had lived in
Melbourne for seven years but had been homeless for the past 12 months after losing his
job.

Brown had saved up money from a disability pension to afford the flight to Perth to
be reunited with his parents.

Mr Law said his client's comments were made as a joke but he now appreciated that it
was the type of joke that should never be told.

Magistrate Joseph Baldino told Brown his assertions might have been empty threats as
there were no bombs or weapons in the bag.

But he said the authorities were well within their rights to take the comments seriously.

Mr Baldino said the offending would have created alarm and fear in the minds of the
passengers who also had their travel delayed.

"This is not a trivial offence by any stretch of the imagination," he said.

The magistrate imposed a $3,250 fine and also ordered Brown to pay court and prosecution costs.

NSW:Pensioner seriously hurt after bashing

SYDNEY, Dec 1 AAP - An 87-year-old woman remains in a serious condition after two men
broke into her home, threw her to the floor and kicked and bashed her about the head with
her own walking stick.

The elderly woman has swelling and bruising to the head, lungs and back following the
incident in North St Marys, western Sydney, about 1.30am (AEDT) on Wednesday.

She remains at Nepean Hospital where further tests are due to be carried out to establish
the full extent of her injuries.

She did not suffer any fractured bones, Superintendent Ray Filewood said.

The woman was home alone at the time of the incident and went to her back door after
hearing a disturbance.

"As she's approached them (the intruders) they've actually pushed her to the floor
and taken her walking stick and actually assaulted her over the head ... and one of the
persons has kicked her," Supt Filewood told Fairfax Radio Network.

The woman raised the alarm through a system installed in her home, he added.

The two intruders wore dark clothing and boots, and stole a plasma television from
the home in Oleander Road before fleeing.

ODDITIES:

+ Customs staff in New Zealand found 23 geckos and 20 skinks in the underwear of a
German man trying to leave the country.

The Christchurch District Court has heard that after he checked in at Christchurch
Airport, 58-year-old Hans Kubus was searched by staff who found a small package containing
the reptiles in his underwear.

His luggage also contained a gecko in a rolled up sock.

Kubus admitted to trading reptiles and illegally taking them from the wild.

A black market trade in geckos exists in Europe and those taken by Kubus would have
had a street value of around $NZ50,000 ($A39,080).

+ Kiwi dolphin Moko, formerly celebrated for his playful spirit, has proven that even
a bottlenose can suffer puberty blues, transforming into an aggressive hormone-pumped
teenager.

Moko has become so aggressive that several swimmers had to be rescued from his North
Island beach in a week.

He has trapped female swimmers and stopped them returning to shore for hours, overturned
kayaks, tripped over water skiers, interfered with surf lifesaving training and blocked
surfers from catching their next wave.

"He's doing what we all do as teenagers," says Professor Mark Orams, a marine science
expert from Auckland University of Technology.

"He's testing his boundaries but he's testing them on humans and humans are coming
off second best."

Prof Orams said people should avoid Moko before a deadly accident occurs.

+ Officials in the Texas city of Big Spring received a string of complaints after a
resident dressed a replica statue of Michelangelo's David in a Santa hat and beard.

Barry McBee says he was trying to make people laugh by dressing the David statue with
six-pack abs as the fat and jolly Santa.

But parents complained, saying their children were asking why Santa was naked.

After city lawyer Linda Sjogren requested that he put more clothes on the statue, McBee
dressed David in a pair of black and white faux-velvet shorts, with a Christmas bow.

Fed: Gilchrist spruiks Australian of the Year nominations

CANBERRA, Aug 3 AAP - Australia's Ashes struggle is not the most important thing on
the mind of former test cricketing great Adam Gilchrist at the moment.

As chairman of the National Australia Day Council his first priority right now is spruiking
the Australian of the Year awards.

That's because nominations for the awards' four categories close on August 31.

Gilchrist was in Canberra on Monday spruiking for more than the 1,000 nominations already
submitted.

Some of the well-known names nominated for the 2010 awards are brain surgeon Charles
Teo, Olympic diver Matthew Mitcham, former Victorian police commissioner Christine Nixon,
rugby league footballer Hazem El Masri and film director Baz Luhrmann.

But the great majority of nominations are for the nation's quiet achievers.

"We see these awards as our gift to ourselves if you like, to acknowledge those people
around us who do amazing things in the community," Gilchrist said.

Pierre Johannessen, 26, from Canberra has been nominated in the Young Australian of
the Year category for developing Big Bang Ballers, a not-for-profit organisation using
basketball to tackle youth poverty and social disadvantage around the world. "I'm
completely shocked," he said of his nomination.

"I'm so awed and inspired and just humbled by the fact that somebody would nominate
me for something like this."

Johannessen, who has launched similar programs in places such as Bangladesh, Pakistan,
India and Nepal, said a nation-wide tour and program would begin next year.

The four award categories are: Australian of the Year, Senior Australian, , Young Australian
and Australia's Local Hero.

Nominations can be submitted online at www.australianoftheyear.org.au

FED: Union power is back at ALP: Hockey

SYDNEY, April 28 AAP - Australia's workers will have no choice but to negotiate through
unions under Labor's proposed workplace laws, federal Industrial Relations Minister Joe
Hockey says.

Mr Hockey lambasted federal Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd and the Labor Party for their
workplace policy documents released today at the party's national conference in Sydney.

It would create 10 guaranteed national employment standards for all workers, including
a standard 38-hour working week, four weeks paid annual leave, penalty rates for working
on public holidays and minimum notice periods for termination or redundancy.

Labor would create a national industrial relations regime for the private sector and
scrap Australian workplace agreements and statutory individual contracts.

The policy has won the backing of the ACTU but Mr Hockey said the policy proposals
would benefit unions and not workers.

"There's nothing in the policy about penalty rates on weekends or for overtime and
yet the Labor Party and the union movement have spent $100 million campaigning on this
over the last two years," Mr Hockey told reporters in Sydney.

Mr Hockey said every worker in Australia would be compelled to have their employment
contract negotiated by a union.

"Every worker in Australia is going to have, by law, a union membership form shoved
under their nose," he said.

"It's an extraordinary provision to say that even if there's not one union member on
site the unions can negotiate on behalf of the workers if they go direct to the employer.

"It's no surprise there was no debate on the floor of the conference because the union
bosses got absolutely everything they wanted.

"The union bosses are back in town with this policy."

NSW: Mentally ill prisoners disadvantaged: report

SYDNEY, Dec 29 AAP - Mentally ill prisoners in NSW serve longer jail terms and are
disadvantaged compared to other inmates, a new report says.

Report author Greg James, QC, says sentences handed to mentally ill people did not
specify a non-parole period, and the health minister did not have to give a reason for
exercising his discretion recommending their continued detention.

"Even if (psychiatric patients) are to be considered quasi-criminals they should not
be subject to more punitive arrangements than convicted offenders," Mr James said in his
report, excerpts of which were published in The Sydney Morning Herald today.

Mr James is examining whether the minister should continue to have the final say over
the release of mentally ill inmates, or whether the power should be handed to a court
or tribunal to decide.

Political considerations could currently influence such decisions, which should only
take into consideration treatment and safety issues, Mr James said.

The present system could also be in breach of international human rights obligations
requiring prompt access to a court ruling for people arrested or detained, he said.

The review will accept public submissions until March 31 next year.

NMA MOBILE: Mobile data m-commerce.

A study of almost 4,000 UK mobile users by Forrester Research suggests a rising appetite for mobile commerce, with almost a fifth claiming that mobile plays an important role in researching product purchases. The research carried out in Q2 2010 shows that heavy mobile internet users aged 25-34 are especially keen on m-commerce.

Nearly a fifth (17%) of all UK mobile users expressed an interest in using their mobile to research a purchase and compare prices. One in ten (11%) said they would like to redeem coupons on their mobile and 12% said they use their phones to locate nearby stores.

The survey of 4,000 UK mobile users found that 7% downloaded at least one app a month and 4% research products for purchase on their handset. However, 31% of heavy mobile internet users aged 25-34 claimed to download apps at least once a month.

Sony Ericsson and Apple are the most popular handset brands among heavy mobile internet users in the age group, commanding market shares of 19% and 18% respectively. RIM's BlackBerry had a 6% share, lagging behind Samsung and Nokia.

While Majority of Banking Customers Satisfied with Their Retail Banks, a Renewed Focus Still Needed on Customer Experience According to 2011 World Retail Banking Report.(Report)

Despite low levels of confidence in the banking industry, the majority (59 percent) of customers are satisfied with their banks, according to the eighth annual World Retail Banking Report released by Capgemini, UniCredit and Efma. New to this year's report is the introduction of the Capgemini Retail Banking Customer Experience Index (CEI), which gauges how customers perceive the quality of their interactions with their banks across three dimensions: products, channels and customer transactions1. Among the key findings of the CEI is that the retail branch remains an important channel for consumers despite the growing popularity of internet banking; however, the branch's role must evolve to meet changing customer needs. The CEI was developed based on a survey of nearly 14,000 bank customers across 25 countries, as well as nearly 50 in-depth interviews with senior banking executives worldwide2. It reveals that receiving superior service is far more important to customers than their bank's reputation. Globally, only 27 percent of customers said brand image is a major contributor to leaving a bank, whereas 55 percent cited service quality. As previous factors - including low prices and innovative products - are quickly losing their ability to provide a competitive edge, delivering a positive customer experience is one of the few differentiators banks can use to stand out in today's market.

According to the CEI, banks' success overall in delivering positive customer experiences is high, with an average rating of 72.2 out of 100. In North America, U.S. banks were rated the highest with a score of 78.0; Switzerland led Europe with 76.2 and India ranked highest in Asia-Pacific with 77.0. However, banks have been much less successful when it comes to delivering positive experiences on the products, channels and banking interactions that are most important to customers. Overall, only 35.8 percent of customers had a positive experience on factors they highlighted as most important to their banking experience. "Capgemini's CEI was built with the understanding that a gap exists between what banks perceive as important to customers and what customers say is most important," said Jean Lassignardie, Global Head of Sales and Marketing, Capgemini Financial Services. "The CEI seeks to align the product, life cycle, and delivery channel capabilities of banks with the values and standards of their customers, providing banks with additional insights to set better business and channel strategies." Banks need to focus on customer experience across banking channels According to the CEI, banks are seeing the largest gap in meeting customers' needs in the area of banking channels. Customers in different regions have varying perceptions of the importance of different channels. Local factors, such as a country's technological infrastructure, and customer comfort and experience with technology are important variables. Banks need to identify the channels that are most important to their customers and offer the most positive experiences for those specific channels.

Research and Markets: VoIP in CEE Opportunities and Forecast, 2010 - 2015 Report: Broadband Network Expansion Drives VoIP Growth.

DUBLIN -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/2e913b/voip_in_cee_opport) has announced the addition of the "VoIP in CEE Opportunities and Forecast, 2010 - 2015" report to their offering.

Broadband Network Expansion Drives VoIP Growth in CEE

The telecoms infrastructure in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region has undergone massive transformation over the past decade. Service providers, keen on taking advantage of the region's growing wealth and openness to the outside world, have invested significant resources in the deployment of modern telecoms networks. The transformation, coupled with increasing levels of disposable income, is resulting in the growing demand for more advanced telecoms services, including broadband.

Indeed, CEE is one of the world's fastest growing regions in terms of new broadband subscriber uptake. BMI forecasts show that fixed broadband subscriptions in the region will exceed 115mn by 2015, almost double the estimated number of connections at the end the end of 2010.

BMI notes that the rapid uptake in broadband services has opened the door of opportunity for various IP-based services. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is one such opportunity. VoIP is particularly attracting a lot of attention from residential and business broadband users alike because of the significant cost savings it affords them, especially on international calls, compared to rates charged for such calls on traditional wireline and mobile networks. Indeed, the European Union's European Regulators Group (ERG) has welcomed the introduction of VoIP services in the region and is committed to adopting a regulatory approach that will enable the greatest possible level of innovation and competitiveness in the market.

Although most initial VoIP subscriptions were based on fixed broadband access provided by small low-cost operators as well as multi-play offerings from larger cable network and xDSL service providers, we expect wireless broadband access to play a leading role in future expansion of VoIP services in CEE. With limited expansion of fixed broadband infrastructure expected in the region due to expensive rollout costs, high population levels in rural areas and very difficult topography in some cases, BMI believes that mobile platforms now offer a genuine opportunity to service providers. This view is strongly supported by the rapid deployment of next generation wireless networks, such as WiMAX, in many countries in the region. At the same time, advanced smartphones and other mobile devices, capable of sending and receiving high-speed data communications, are beginning to offer a variety of options in the delivery of VoIP services

TOP U.S. COMMANDER IN IRAQ RAISES INTERNET CONCERNS.

WASHINGTON -- The following information was released by the Department of Defense American Forces Press Service:

By Lisa Daniel

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, June 4, 2010 -- Army Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, reflecting on lessons learned and the way ahead as the outgoing top commander in Iraq, voiced concerns today about how the ease of Internet communications sometimes undermine military operations.

"One of the things we have continued to work hard at is the change in global communications and its impact on warfare," Odierno said during a Pentagon press briefing. "It's absolutely essential that we take a hard look at how we're going to address this issue."

Odierno, who commanded the Army's 3rd Corps in Iraq from May 2006 until taking over U.S. Forces Iraq in September 2008, is not the first military leader to voice concerns about how the unregulated and ubiquitous nature of Internet communications undermine security efforts. Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of Multinational Force Iraq before becoming commander of U.S. Central Command in October 2008, voiced similar concerns during budget hearings on Capitol Hill earlier this year.

Odierno and others have raised concerns about al-Qaida and other terrorist groups' recruiting and public relations efforts on the Internet. Even as military operations chip away at the groups' insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan - killing or capturing 34 of 42 al-Qaida in Iraq leaders in the past three months - militant websites don't reflect that.

"What they're telling people on their website is completely different than what is happening on the ground," the general said.

Odierno, whom President Barack Obama has nominated to head the Norfolk, Va.-based U.S. Joint Forces Command after rotating out of Iraq at the end of summer, endorsed the Defense Department's new Cyber Command to work on such Internet issues.

The U.S. military has been the target of numerous e-mail scams, Odierno said, including the social networking site, Facebook. His own Facebook site has been used in schemes to extort money, he said.

"These are real challenges to us that we really have to get after," he said.

Army Lt. Gen. Lloyd Austin has been chosen to replace Odierno as commander of U.S. Forces Iraq.

Earlier polling backs Iran results.(Local)(Survey)

By KEN BALLEN and PATRICK DOHERTY

THE ELECTION results in Iran may reflect the will of the Iranian people. Many experts are claiming that the margin of victory of incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was the result of fraud or manipulation, but our nationwide public opinion survey of Iranians three weeks before the vote showed Ahmadinejad leading by more than a 2-to-1 margin -- greater than his apparent margin of victory in Friday's election.

While Western news reports from Tehran in the days leading up to the voting portrayed an Iranian public enthusiastic about Ahmadinejad's principal opponent, Mir Hossein Mousavi, our scientific sampling from across all 30 of Iran's provinces showed Ahmadinejad well ahead.

Independent and uncensored nationwide surveys of Iran are rare. Typically, pre-election polls there are either conducted or monitored by the government and are untrustworthy.

By contrast, the poll undertaken by our nonprofit organizations May 11-20 was the third in a series over the past two years. Conducted by telephone from a neighboring country, field work was carried out in Farsi by a polling company whose work in the region for ABC News and the BBC has received an Emmy Award.

The breadth of Ahmadinejad's support was apparent in our pre-election survey. During the campaign, for instance, Mousavi emphasized his identity as an Azeri, the second-largest ethnic group in Iran after Persians, to woo Azeri voters. Our survey indicated, though, that Azeris favored Ahmadinejad by 2 to 1 over Mousavi.

Much commentary has portrayed Iranian youth and the Internet as harbingers of change in this election. But our poll found that only a third of Iranians even have access to the Internet, while 18- to 24-year-olds made up the strongest voting bloc for Ahmadinejad of all age groups.

The only demographic groups in which our survey found Mousavi leading or competitive with Ahmadinejad were university students and graduates and the highest-income Iranians. When our poll was taken, almost a third of Iranians were also still undecided. Yet the baseline distributions we found then mirror the results reported by the Iranian authorities -- indicating the possibility that the vote is not the product of widespread fraud.

Some might argue that the professed support for Ahmadinejad we found simply reflected fearful respondents' reluctance to provide honest answers to pollsters. Yet the integrity of our results is confirmed by the politically risky responses Iranians were willing to give to a host of questions.

For instance, nearly four in five Iranians -- including most Ahmadinejad supporters -- said they wanted to change the political system to give them the right to elect Iran's supreme leader, who is not currently subject to popular vote. Similarly, Iranians chose free elections and a free press as their most important priorities for their government, virtually tied with improving the national economy.

These were hardly "politically correct" responses to voice publicly in a largely authoritarian society.

Indeed, and consistently among all three of our surveys over the past two years, more than 70 percent of Iranians also expressed support for providing full access to weapons inspectors and a guarantee that Iran will not develop or possess nuclear weapons, in return for outside aid and investment. And 77 percent of Iranians favored normal relations and trade with the United States, another result consistent with our previous findings.

Iranians view their support for a more democratic system, with normal relations with the United States, as consonant with their support for Ahmadinejad. They do not want him to continue his hard-line policies. Rather, Iranians apparently see Ahmadinejad as their toughest negotiator, the person best positioned to bring home a favorable deal -- rather like a Persian Nixon going to China.

Before other countries, including the United States, jump to the conclusion that the Iranian presidential elections were fraudulent, they should consider all independent information. The fact may simply be that the re-election of Ahmadinejad is what the Iranian people wanted.

Ken Ballen is president of Terror Free Tomorrow: The Center for Public Opinion, a nonprofit institute that researches attitudes toward extremism. Patrick Doherty is deputy director of the American Strategy Program at the New America Foundation. The groups' May 11-20 polling consisted of 1,001 interviews across Iran and had a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points. This column appeared earlier in The Washington Post.
