NSW: Prison violence in NSW on the rise -Oppn
The state opposition says violence in New South Wales prisons has reached epidemicproportions, with record numbers of inmates assaulting one another and prison officers.
Opposition spokesman for Corrective Services MICHAEL RICHARDSON says the incidencesof inmates assaulting other inmates rose 92 per cent, from 751 to 1439, between 1995 and2001.
He says the number of assaults on officers by full-time inmates increased by 32 percent last year.
Mr RICHARDSON says the figures were obtained from the Assaults and Fights in NSW CorrectionCentres 2001 report under Freedom of Information.
He says they confirm NSW has the worst prison assault rate of all Australian states.
Mr RICHARDSON says Mulwala women's prison at Silverwater is the most violent facilityin NSW, followed by the nearby Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre.
