Fed: Report says Nauru, Christmas Is detainees "tortured"
A refugee advocate's report released today says asylum seekers on Nauru and ChristmasIsland have been tortured and subjected to inhuman, cruel and degrading treatment.
The Soldiers, Sailors and Asylum Seekers report claims the Australian government andauthorities have breached international conventions by their treatment of asylum seekersin detention camps on the islands.
The report's based on submissions by asylum seekers to Melbourne refugee advocate KATEDURHAM, the founder of Spare Rooms for Refugees.
Former federal opposition immigration spokeswoman CARMEN LAWRENCE helped launch today'sreport, saying murderers enjoy better living conditions than asylum seekers.
Human Rights lawyer JULIAN BURNSIDE QC says the report details serious allegationsof people being held down and beaten, being served one spoonful of rice a day and havingsalty water thrown on wounds.
Mr BURNSIDE says Australia has lost its position as one of the champions of human rightsin the world and is now amongst the pariah states.
